The term Jack O’Lantern comes to us from the British Isles, a variant of the more common expression Will o’the Wisp. Both have a similar meaning. “Jack O’Lantern” literally means a man with a lantern. In centuries past, night watchmen were called Jacks o’lantern. Read more

Friends have suggested to me that, by exposing some recent antics of Christopher Hitchens, I have only helped the militant atheist sell more books. Maybe so. But Mr. Hitchens needs to have a spotlight shone on him now, and conservatives should pay attention.
It hardly needs saying that Hitchens’ abusive treatment of 9-11 hero Father George Rutler — previously described on this blog — demands coverage in and of itself, on general principle. (1) But there is more. Like the proverbial canary in the coal mine, the now-infamous confrontation between Hitchens and Father Rutler at Manhattan’s Union League Club on May 1 portends worse things ahead. Christopher Hitchens puzzles many conservatives. On the one hand, he appears to be one of our staunchest allies in the war on Islamist insurgents. Yet Hitchens makes no secret of the fact that he loathes and despises us. By “us”, I mean all those conservatives who believe in God, which is another way of saying all genuine conservatives.
Now here is the riddle: If Hitchens hates conservatives, why does he break bread with us at so many political gatherings, and why does he side with us in our present war with militant Islam? Scientists are calling it a new species of serolid isopod. But any amateur fossil hunter will see in this newly-discovered creature a strong resemblance to the trilobite — a crab-like arthropod which presumably went extinct more than 250 million years ago, after flourishing for some 251 million years in the primordial seas.
During three Antarctic voyages between 2002 and 2005, the German research vessel Polarstern discovered more than 700 new species of marine life, in frigid depths ranging from 774 to 6,348 meters (about 2,500 to 21,000 feet). The creature shown on the left — identified as a new type of serolid isopod — was one of the exotic beasts found by the Polarstern expedition. Read more
