Scandal looms over CPAC’s upcoming debate on “A Conservative Drug Policy”. Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in Media (AIM) reports:

“Calvina Fay of the Drug Free America Foundation has pulled out as a speaker at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which begins in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, because a `mini-debate’ she was scheduled to appear in had been stacked against her. As it now stands, the event will feature two advocates of drug legalization, both of them funded by leftist billionaire and anti-Bush activist George Soros.” (1)

According to Mr. Kincaid, Mrs. Fay was supposed to debate Ethan Nadelmann of the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), while Rob Kampia of the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) moderated. The DPA and MPP both receive funding from Soros’s Open Society Institute. Now that Mrs. Fay has dropped out, it seems a bit unclear who will be debating whom, and what they will discuss.

The so-called “mini-debate” over drug policy has become an annual event at CPAC. Last year, your humble servant had the honor of opposing Mr. Nadelmann (go here for a transcript).(2) Personally, I applaud CPAC’s efforts to encourage more discussion of drug policy. However, neither Mr. Nadelmann nor his sponsor George Soros are conservatives, hence neither has any place in a conservative forum whose stated purpose is to air “differences within the family.”(3)

What irked me about Nadelmann’s performance last year was that he led the audience, through innuendo, to believe that he shared his listeners’ conservative views. Such deceptive tactics remind me of the old Communist Party front groups. That CPAC would condone this charade, by continuing to host it year after year, is disappointing.

UPDATE 02.08.06: Congressman Mark E. Souder today denounced George Soros’s infiltration of CPAC, likening Soros’s manipulation of front groups to similar tactics employed by notorious influence peddler Jack Abramoff. Citing Cliff Kincaid’s February 7 exposé “Soros Infiltrates Conservative Movement” published in the AIM Report, Congressman Souder formally read Kincaid’s article into the Congressional Record. (4)
