“The Soros purges have begun,” warns FrontPage managing editor Ben Johnson, in an incisive analysis of the Lieberman ouster. Citing our newly-released book The Shadow Party, Mr. Johnson writes:

“Having gained possession of the nation’s oldest party, Soros and his ilk launched what David Horowitz and Richard Poe describe in their new book, The Shadow Party, as `Vietnam II’: the campaign to undermine American morale and beat a hasty retreat in Iraq, as the Democratic Left did during Vietnam. This would be followed by `Watergate II’: the impeachment of President Bush for `lying America into war.'” (1)

Johnson lays out the hidden chronology of the anti-Lieberman coup:

December 9, 2004: MoveOn PAC director Eli Pariser, acting on behalf of George Soros’ Shadow Party, e-mails MoveOn members, stating, “In the last year, grassroots contributors like us gave more than $300 million to the Kerry campaign and the DNC, and proved that the Party doesn’t need corporate cash to be competitive. Now it’s our Party: we bought it, we own it, and we’re going to take it back.” (2)

November 28, 2005: The Marxist journal The Nation calls for a purge of pro-war Democrats, writing, “We will not support any candidate for national office who does not make a speedy end to the war in Iraq a major issue of his or her campaign.” (3)

May 26, 2006: MoveOn PAC endorses Ned Lamont.(4)

June 10, 2006: Lamont campaign announces that leftist bloggers and Web-based groups have recruited some 2,000 volunteers and half a million dollars to defeat Lieberman.(5)

June 15, 2006: Speaking at the Shadow Party’s annual Take Back America conference in Washington, Ned Lamont receives three standing ovations — the first, lasting a full 20 seconds, upon his introduction.(6)

August 8, 2006: Ned Lamont defeats Joseph Lieberman, receiving the Democratic Party’s nomination to the U.S. Senate from Connecticut.

August 8, 2006: While the votes are still being counted, Senator Hillary Clinton’s HillPAC announces that it is donating $5,000 to Ned Lamont’s Senate campaign, making Hillary the first Democratic leader to extend concrete support to Lamont.(7) (hat tip, Ben Johnson)

As Johnson observes, Lieberman’s ouster — and the copious funding that drove it — demonstrates that “Vietnam II” is in full swing.
