FBI Probes Former Operative of David Brock’s Media Matters for America

Blogger Hugh Hewitt calls it “Chuckaquiddick.” The Freepers call it “Schumergate.” Either way, it’s bad news for Democrats, in particular for Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer and Democrat operative David Brock.

FBI investigators are currently probing one Katie Barge for illegally obtaining a credit report on Maryland’s Republican Lieutenant Governor Michael S. Steele. Barge undertook the project on behalf of Senator Schumer’s Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC). She was formerly research director of David Brock’s Media Matters for America (MMFA), a Democrat smear machine.

“Don’t bother with The New York Times if you want details,” writes syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin this morning. “Since revelations of the scandal first broke a week ago on the national wires and in the rest of the New York media, the Times has failed to print a single word about the Dems’ invasive — and obviously illegal — dumpster diving.”

You will, however, find good summaries of the Schumergate scandal at and in a Weekly Standard article published this morning, by Captain’s Quarters blogger Edward Morrissey.

In June, African-American Republican Steele revealed his interest in running for the U.S. Senate in 2006. Schumer’s DSCC resolved to stop him. The DSCC works to elect Democrats to the Senate.  Schumer was appointed DSCC chairman on November 17, 2004.

In July, DSCC research director Katie Barge and her deputy Lauren Weiner retrieved Lt. Governor Steele’s social security number from a court document, then used the number to get Steele’s credit report.

What happened next is a little unclear.

Newsday says that Barge reported her findings “within hours” to DSCC executive director J.B. Poersch, Jr., whereupon Senator Schumer personally urged his staff to “report it immediately to the authorities,” according to a DSCC flack.

Barge and Weiner were suspended with pay, their crime reported to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington, DC, which is now investigating the case jointly with the FBI. Barge and Weiner – “Schumer’s plumbers,” as Hugh Hewitt calls them – resigned in early September.

If indicted, the two women may face two years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

“The lieutenant governor is the victim of identity theft and would like these people prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They posed as him to get his credit report,” said Steele’s chief of staff Paul Ellington, quoted in Newsday of September 22.

Democrat spinmeisters have dismissed the matter as an “isolated incident” of youthful zeal gone awry. But Barge is no babe in the woods. She was DSCC research director, a hardened Beltway operative very much at home in the extra-legal demimonde of political sleazemongering.

When Schumer’s DSCC hired Katie Barge in February 2005, she had already served as research director for David Brock’s Media Matters and as opposition researcher for Senator John Edwards’ abortive presidential campaign.

“It seems that Ms. Barge got hired by the DSCC for exactly the purpose for which she got suspended,” notes Edward Morrissey on his Captain’s Quarters blog.

This will never stick to Schumer. He is way too slick.

  2. Publius says:

tsk tsk, another commiecrat got his tit in the wringer. Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving jerk either. When he was haranging Judge Roberts a few weeks ago he should have asked the Judge’s opinion on illegally obtained credit information.

  3. nopeace4traitors says:

I think you mean way too slimey

  4. tazzmax says:

That phony “grinnin” SOB, take-my-guns Schumer has been on my shit list a long time and I hope they hang his ass! What a sorry piece of shit!

  5. Joshua Knape says:

In my opinion, among Democrat senators, Schumer most embodies arrogance in the form of contempt for his constituents and the public.

  6. Publius says:

    Schumer… Kennedy… Schumer… Kennedy… decisions, decisions. Both such scumbags.

  7. conservativeHippie says:

Democrats hold the great unwashed masses in the utmost contempt. The DNC should adopt the motto of Globogym from the movie Dodgeball. “Here at Globogym we’re better than you, and we know it.”
Joshua is correct, Chucky is the most pompous condescending legal hack that I have ever witnessed. When he speaks it makes me feel like I am back in Kindergarten.

  8. rightwingmac says:

Schumer, Pelosi, Kennedy, Reid, Lee, McKinney, Harkin, Waters, Boxer, Dean, and Kerry.

How does such odious trash actually get elected?
Complacency on our part and fraud on their part.

The latter depends on the former however, so all we have to do is be vigilant and relentless.

Fungus shrivels in the sun after all.

  9. tazzmax says:

Shit stinks when you stir it. Morons keep voting them in and I don’t think it’ll ever stop. It’s sad and frightening to think of how many morons have the right to vote here in America!!!

  10. peedoffamerican says:

Hmmmmmm! Tom Delay is indicted for what some underlings did in a PAC, far less serious than what Schumer’s underlings did for him directly.

  11. Publius says:

Where’s the lefty press? They’re too busy salivating over Delay. Who knows peedoff, republicans aren’t the political animals democ-rats are. (LOL I’m not talking about us, I’m talking about elected republicans) Look how easy they let Sandy Burgler off considering the seriousness of his crime.

  12. blogman says:

I want to see Charles Schumer frog-marched from the US Senate and into a van waiting to take him to prison.

If Dems are interested in truth, they will demand that a federal grand jury investigate what Schumer knew and when he knew it.

After all, he must have ordered this.

  13. RedBeard says:

Leaving Schumer’s abysmal political record aside, and descending to a primal level, I must say that his smarmy grin makes me physically ill.

  14. kev says:

It’s a good thing this didn’t take place in Travis County, Tesas. Ronnie-Boy would be on Schumer like stink on poo! Oh, wait a minute, Schumer’s not a Republican. What was I thinking? Never mind.
